It is well known that 'end grain' boards are great for knife care. It is not well known that Camphor Laurel boards are also great for knife care. Camphor Laurel wood grows in a unique way that creates 'length grain' boards with the properties of an 'end grain' boards. Camphor Laurel is considred a hardwood, but is at the softer density of the hardwood scale. These qualities allow our Camphor laurel boards to care for your knives over years of use.
Every Laurelwood cutting board is constructed out of ONE PIECE of Camphor Laurel. The exception to this is our Hardwood Handle Range, yet the 'working surface' of the board is still ONE PIECE of Camphor Laurel. The benefits to our ONE PIECE construction are:
As well as the anti-bacterial benefits of using Camphor Laurel as a food preparation surface is its natural 'camphor' smell. A little like eucalyptus, this natural smell WILL NOT PENETRATE OR CONTAMINATE YOUR FOOD but will help from keeping the board going 'rancid' after years of use. Once the smell diminishes from the board, a light sanding and a coat of grape-seed oil will restore the smell and luster to the board.
Every one of our boards is hand-crafted. Once each piece of Camphor Laurel is air and kiln dried over a 12 month period, it is then accessed to evaluate the best board to 'extract' from that particular piece of timber. This evaluation process is based on the timbers grain flows, grain color, and imperfections. The result is a spectacular cutting board that is truly unique.Click here for board care and cleaning instructions.
